Instead of going to college right after high school I decided to give a year of service with an Americorps program called City Year as a tutor and mentor for youth in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I was placed at Rufus King International Middle School in a seventh-grade English class where sometimes my partner teacher and I had over 50 students at once. Challenging doesn’t begin to describe it. Once I became used to whole-class support, I was given a focus list of 10 students for whom I ran small group ELA interventions based on STAR test scores. By the end of the year, my students, who were behind their classmates by more than 30%, closed their learning gaps, and even surpassed some of their classmates. Seeing what I was able to accomplish during just one year of service inspired me to serve another year as a team leader. I was taught to lead a team of tutors, to utilize multiple curriculums, and to push myself above and beyond what I thought was possible. That same year I began my college journey and finished with a 4.0 GPA. I am currently a Neuroscience major and a Psychology major at Loyola University New Orleans, and I started Everyone Can Learn Tutoring and Coaching Services as a way to give back by providing an affordable, supplemental education for anyone who needs it. Whether you're a parent looking for someone to help your kids or a college student struggling to wrap your head around an advanced math topic, we can help. Everyone has a right to a quality education, and while schools don't always provide that, we do.
